The Metric System

The Metric System

Learning Target: Know the metric units of length, capacity, and mass.

How it Works: The Metric System

milli-thousandth, centi-hundreth, deci-tenth, kilo-thousandth

By adding these prerixes to the base unit-meter,gram,liter- we create the different units used to measure in the metric system

EX.    milli+meter= millimeter or thousandth of a meter

centi+meter=centimeter or hundreth of a meter

deci+meter=decimeter or tenth of a meter

        kilo+meter=kilometeror thousand meters

By now you should know that the metric system of measuerment is based on tens.

Length

The base unit of length is the meter. Other units of length are millimeters, centimeters, decimeters, and kilometers.

Obreveations- millimeter-mm/centimeter-cm/decimeter-dm/meter-m/kilometer-km

Coverting Metric Measures of Length

If you start with mm you divide by 10 to get cm then divide by 10 to get decimeters then divide by 10 to get meters then by 1000 to get km. When you start at km you are doing the same thing, just multiplying.

The Decimal Way

Large to Small:move decimal to the right

Small to Large:move decimal to left

Capacity

For capacity in the metric system, the base unit is the liter. Other units consist of milligrams and kilograms.

1 liter = eyedropper   /   1 liter = small pitcher

Obreveations - millileter-mL/liter-L

1000 milliliters is equal to 1 liter because as i told you before the metric system is based on tens.

These bottles are both equal to 1 liter. An eyedropper like this is equal to 1 milliliter

Mass

Mass is the amount of material an object has.

The base unit in capacity is the gram. The other units are milligrams, and kilograms.

1 milligram-grain of salt   /   1 gram-small paper clip   /   1 kilogram- six medium apples

1 grain of this salt is a milligramthis paper clip is equal to a gram

six of these apples is equal to a kilogram

Learning Target

Use stratagies to develope formulas for finding the circumfrance

of a circle.

Example

multiplie the diameter by π to get the circumfrance.

If the diameter is 12.1 what would the circumfrance be?

diameter-12.1

12.1 * π = 38.0132711

Lesson

Last week, We did an activity with the diameters and circumfrances of circles.

We took circular objects and found the circumfances and diameters of them.

We found that the circumfrance divided by the diameter equals π.We also learned

that the diameter times π equals the circumfrance.

Learn π by going to Mrs. Glosser's Math Goodies

Learning Target

Estimate sums and differences using decimals

Example

63.11 63

+63.44 +63

126.55 126

61.66 62

-43.44 -62

015 .10 19

Lesson

Rounding decimals.

If the decimal is after the piont is 4 or lower, you round down. If it is 5 or hgher, you round up. Add or subtract the 2 rounded

numbers.

Solar Water Heater Blog Project

default
Question and Hypothesis
My questions were, wich solar water heater background works the best, and wil tmperature increase more if we cover the solar water heater with a lid?
If we use auncovered black solar water heater, then the water will get the hottest.
Results in  sentence form
Covered black's temperature increased the most.
Conclusion statement based on data and results
A black covered solar water heater works the best.
Changes for next time
Some changes for next time would be bigger containers, wrap foil around the edges, tilt the solar water heater towards the sun, and also do the expirement on a sunnier day.
New quetions
     1. Will more or less water make a difference?
     2. Will soapy water make a difference?
