Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and justify your solutions using manipulatives and mathmatical reasoning.

Lesson

To add and subtract fractions you must first find the LCD (Least Common Denominator).  To do this you must find the least common multiple that BOTH denominators go into and put that as both fractions'  denominators.

Examples

1/4+2/3=?   LCD=12            1/4=3/12           2/3=8/12              3/12+8/12=11/12

Use strategies to develop formulas for finding the circumference of circles

What We Did

We measured the circumference of random circular objects to the nearest millimeter. We then measured the diameter to the nearest millimeter. We then found out that the diameter of a circle multiplied by pi equals the circumference of the circle.  Example: d*pi=c  if d=4, then 4*3.14=c and c=12.56.

default

defaultThe radius is the half of diameter.  So, if you multiply the radius by 2, then multiply it by pi, or 3.14, you get the circumference of that circle.  r*2*pi=c
