Learning Target
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators and justify your solutions using manipulatives and mathematical reasoning.
Lesson
Too add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators, you must first find the least common denominator [or LCD] for the fractions. Next, you must find the equivalent fractions by multiplying the numerator as many time as you multiplied the denominator to get the LCD. After you have completed that, just find the sum or difference of the two numerators, and there's your answer.
Example
2/4 + 5/12 LCM=12 4*3=12 2*3=6 12*1=1 5*1=5
6/12 + 5/12 = 11/12
